Personal Support Worker (PSW)

Position Overview

Provide personal care to residents and help them with activities of daily living. Support them to be independent as long as possible; and maintain quality of life for residents by providing a clean, healthy, safe environment.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Personal care provided in a dignified manner to residents:

  • Bathe, toilet, incontinence management, mouth care, dressing & grooming, hair and nail care, social interaction, assist with eating.

  • Communicate and work collaboratively with residents, team members, family members, supervisors

Cleaning:

  • Maintain the tidiness of the resident’s rooms by organizing closets & bedside tables, cleaning wheelchairs, commodes/urinals/bed pans, wash basins, carts etc.

  • Distribute clean linens and towels, change soiled bed linens

  • Follow manufacturer's guidelines for tub cleaning & disinfection

Nutritional Care:

  • Assist with feeding residents as per their care plan

  • Open cartons, cut food, place items within reach

  • Distribute food & fluids to the residents off the snack/ fluid cart

  • Provide fluids throughout each shift

Transferring & Repositioning:

  • Portering residents to dining rooms, bedrooms, activities

  • Empty garbage and linen bags from carts

  • Transfer residents using appropriate transfer device.

  • Use mechanical lifts to transfer residents from bed/chair/toilet

  • Repositioning residents in bed using transfer sheets

  • Application and removal of lift slings when using mechanical lifts

Charting and Reporting:

  • Documentation on Point Click Care, each shift to reflect ADL, behaviours, continence, mouth care and meal/ fluid intake

  • Log repair or maintenance issues in the maintenance binder

  • Report to Team Leader changes, concerns, or resident situation that occur during the shift

    Mechanical lift safe start up sheets must be completed prior to equipment use

General:

  • Employee must keep up-to-date on all relevant legislation, collective bargaining agreements, WQCC Policies and Procedures, etc. ensuring that these are implemented as prescribed.

  • Employee must possess the physical ability to meet the duties and responsibilities of the job description.

Qualifications

Minimum Formal Education:

  • Personal Support Worker Certificate

  • None
